And a wonderful human being...
That's Russell Cooze, articulate, thoughtful, principled, with immaculate musical and sartorial taste, even if he is a Manchester City fan.
Russ weaves the most intricate bass lines, adding fresh layers of musicality to the least promising of material. He will bring his Orange stack to the smallest of venues, but when you hear him, you really appreciate that the pain was SO worth it.
His incredible cool and taste in all things extends to his guitars with a gaggle of Fender Custom Shop Jazz Bases being complemented by a deep throated Gibson Thunderbird, a vintage Rickenbacker and his first Fender Precision bass, more about which shall be revealed in future blogs.
Russ and I have known each other since Junior School and, following on from adventures as the only school band at the time and following years apart, we came together again in Sun Machine in 2008, where we played over 100 gigs - pubs, clubs, iconic venues such as the Fleece, the Louisiana, the Cheese and Grain in Frome and onto Festivals, both local and national. The album 'Silver Wires' (boasting Russ's bracelet collection on the cover) is still available from iTunes and is testimony to his bass playing genius. In my humble opinion, he has taken this to another level with Higher Lovers, fully justifying my description of him in the title above. Today is a special day for him and so it is only fitting that he is celebrated in this blog.
