The Higher Lovers album was produced, mixed and mastered by the wonderful Dominic Bailey-Clay at his 9 Volt Leap Studios in Melksham, Wiltshire.
I'd come across Dom previously and we'd used 9 Volt Leap as a rehearsal space, but I'd been particularly impressed with his production work for Port Erin, notably from my point of view on the albums, 'Floating Above The City' and 'Port Erin Live'.
I found Dom a delight to work with and someone who 'lived' the songs, got inside them and heard different lines and treatments in his head, suggesting changes and improvements constructively and with sensitivity. Examples of this can be found in the harmony guitar line on You Are The Sun, the vocal treatments on Dive Down Under Water and any number of small things that possibly only I would know that wasn't originally there, but which elevates the songs in their recorded form.
Dom was especially helpful with my vocals, which have issues, enabling me to get the best out of a flawed instrument. The recording process tested Dom's versatility (and probably also his patience), from using every mic he had when recording Annabelle's gargantuan drum kit, to inserting the keyboard and guitar audio tracks I'd recorded in my home studio into a coherent whole.
