Was from a joyous night at the intimate setting of the Cellar Bar in Devizes - a memorable occasion when Higher Lovers crammed themselves onto the bijou fireplace, come stage at a fantastic venue. She explains that the photo shows her with full drum set up (almost), slim, trim, focussed and, yes, devastatingly sexy (her words). It also shows her live-in bear and chief band mascot Penny, grooving on down to the beat as usual.
Russ and I were rammed into the far corner of the stage, struggling to avoid bashing guitar heads against each other while we played. The small, but enthusiastic, crowd looked on, clapped, cheered and offered kind words at the end.
That night we were supporting Olivia Awbrey, an indie/blues artist from mid-west USA, on her tour of the UK. She was due to play with her full band, but due to transport issues, she was alone. Undaunted, she simply plugged her semi-acoustic into my Fender Deluxe amp and played a storming set of originals and the occasional cover. It was lovely getting to meet her, talk to her and share a fireplace with her. Her new album is out shortly and we'd encourage you to look out for it.
The gig was put on by the force of nature that is Kieran J Moore of Sheer Music. First on (and sound man for the night) was the incomparable Michael J Barham, who I've never heard play badly. A giant of a man with an equally big heart and great voice, he plays solo and in various bands in and around the area. It's always a good night when Mike's on the bill.
